Empty Nest

“Empty Nest” ran from October 8, 1988 to June 17, 1995 and added a new facet to the ‘Golden Girls’ universe: instead of four older ladies, we meet the widowed paediatrician Dr. Harry Weston (Richard Mulligan), who lives in the same sunny Miami and has to deal with the pitfalls of everyday family life as well as some strange patients.

The comedy is fed by typical parent-child conflicts, crazy neighbors and Harry's own balancing act between work and private life - always spiced up with the unmistakable humor established by series creator Susan Harris and producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas.

Recurring guest appearances by “The Golden Girls” ensured that series fans also felt right at home in “Empty Nest”. Bea Arthur, Betty White and Rue McClanahan popped in from time to time, and things got even more golden in the last two seasons in particular: Estelle Getty continued her role as Sophia, which she had previously played in “The Golden Girls” and “The Golden Palace”. This allowed Harry's cozy house to become an extended meeting place for the Miami clique, which made for lots of charming dialogues and funny entanglements.

With a total of 170 episodes over seven seasons, “Empty Nest” continued the tradition of warm-hearted family and friendship comedies. Instead of cheesecake and late-night kitchen table conversations, everything revolved around the sometimes turbulent everyday life in the Weston household, often accompanied by Harry's dog Dreyfuss or the brash neighbor Charley Dietz (David Leisure). Anyone who appreciates the easy-going mixture of humor, wisdom and a touch of nostalgia will find “Empty Nest” the perfect complement to Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia.
